July's top trades were dominated by ETFs, led by Vanguard's MSCI Index International Shares (ASX: VGS) and Australian Shares (ASX: VAS) funds, followed by iShares' S&P 500 ETF (ASX: IVV). ETFs made up 13 of the top 20 trades, and most of that activity was buying rather than selling. Individual stocks showed the opposite pattern: every single-stock holding in the top 20 saw markedly higher sell activity than the ETFs above it, suggesting investors used July's volatility to trim individual positions while continuing to build their ETF holdings.

In July, the top-traded stocks were NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) and CSL (ASX: CSL), with CSL climbing into second place. Three stocks were new entries or re-entries into the top 20 this month: National Australia Bank (ASX: NAB), Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE: TSM). Sell pressure was particularly elevated among WiseTech Global (ASX: WTC), Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU), BHP (ASX: BHP) and Woodside Energy (ASX: WDS), each showing markedly higher selling activity relative to its trade volume, suggesting Australian investors are becoming more selective even among the most actively traded names.
