Import your trading history to Sharesight using the AI file importer
Getting your trades into Sharesight is the first step to accurately tracking your portfolio’s performance. With four import methods now available, there's an option to suit every broker and situation. In this article, we cover Sharesight's newest import method: the AI file importer.

What is the AI file importer?
Sharesight offers four ways to get your trades in: connecting directly to your broker via API, setting up automatic trade confirmation email forwarding, uploading a spreadsheet of historical trades, or using the AI file importer. The first two are the most convenient — once set up, your portfolio updates automatically. But when those options aren't available, or when you need to import historical trading data, a file-based method is the recommended way to populate your portfolio with trades.
The standard CSV file importer works well when your broker's spreadsheet meets Sharesight's formatting requirements, but that isn't always the case. Some brokers produce spreadsheets that don't match Sharesight's expected format, which means you need to manually reformat the file before it can be uploaded. The AI file importer removes that step entirely. It reads and interprets buy and sell trades and opening balances from almost any file type, without requiring any reformatting on your part.
What file types does it support?
The AI file importer accepts a wide range of file types, including:
- Broker spreadsheets in any format, including those Sharesight does not natively support
- PDF trade confirmations
- Screenshots of trade history
- Images of statements or contract notes.
When should you use the AI file importer?
The AI file importer is most useful when:
- Your broker's spreadsheet format isn't supported: If the standard file importer can't read your broker's spreadsheet, the AI file importer can handle it without any reformatting.
- You're setting up opening balances: The AI file importer allows you to import a snapshot of your holdings from any statement or document.
- There's no direct broker connection available: If your broker doesn't have an API integration with Sharesight, the AI file importer gives you a straightforward way to get your trading history in.
One thing to keep in mind: because the AI file importer interprets data rather than reading a fixed format, it's worth reviewing the imported trades carefully before confirming. As with any AI-powered tool, occasional errors are possible.
Note: If you prefer not to use AI, you can turn off AI features at any time in Account preferences. We’ve updated our privacy policy and terms of use to explain how AI processing works at Sharesight.
